It Can Wait
Another Friday, another 100 words for Friday Fictioneers! This week’s prompt is an image of a place I’d very much like to be right now. I’m getting tired of snow!
It Can Wait
Hand in hand they walked toward the beach, feeling the warmth of the wood beneath their feet and the ocean spray on their faces.
She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, smiling. “This is perfect. I am so happy.”
“Me too,” he said, his free hand fidgeting around his pocket.
Over the roar of the ocean she heard the song. Muffled at first, it blared when he removed the phone from his pocket.
“Work…It might be important,” he said.
Even in the warmth of the tropical sun her icy glare sent shivers through him.
“Don’t you dare answer that.”

He deserved the icy glare. Nicely written H.L. Some people can’t leave the job behind no matter what.
Some people love their workcations
I know the glare she gave. I give it to my workaholic daughter often. Nice write.
I imagine your icy glare is enough to stop your daughter in her tracks
ooh, i thought he was reaching for an engagement ring. instead he got a phone ring. i hope she throws it in the ocean. well done.
A proposal never even occurred to me. Him dropping to a knee to propose and her taking a work call before letting him finish would have made for an interesting ending.
Oh, all too true. Good job. I think next time he’ll be on vacation on his own.
janet
I think you might be right!
All too familiar scenario for me. I hope he didn’t dare… Nice work.
Thanks Sandra!
good one! How can someone be good at their job but incapable of coordinating a vacation?
Thank you. It’s one of those greater mysteries I suppose.
Not where I thought your were going with this. Nicely done!
Ha, that inverse twist was brilliant. I expected a gun. And there was a phone.
Hi H.L.,
Bravo to you for writing an anti cell phone story. Or mobile phone if you’re British. I’m really tired of seeing people tied to them like they are so important. I’d write more, but my cell is beeping. Ron
Well done! A work call has no place on the beach.
I’m sick of the cold too!
ugh.. Sometimes work just needs to understand the meaning of vacations. great writing.
Nice! Made me smile. I have been on holidays like this with workaholics who refuse to leave their phones behind – the last one ended up in his pint of beer ringing away merrily for a few seconds before dying and leaving us to enjoy our holiday!
Nice misdirection to a good twist!
I was with Rich, thinking he was going for an engagement ring. It was all set up – hand in hand, a perfect day. I hope he takes notice of her icy glare!
Oh man… that’s happened to me. How tropically topical. Nice!
Important things are to give the proper attention. Voice mail will cover the urgency. Very accurate showing her response.
