NaNoWriMo 2014

The temperature has come down. The leaves have changed color and are beginning to fall from their trees. Football is in full swing and mustaches are sprouting up everywhere. It is November and it’s once again time for National Novel Writing Month.

Last year was a massive failure. I’ll do my best not to break my hand again, but no promises! As I write this blog post at 12:36 am, I sit at roughly 9,700 words which is slightly behind where I should be on the 7th day to reach the target. I’ve had a productive day today and I plan to try and catch up this weekend. If I don’t, I’ll be in trouble.

I wanted to use the accelerated schedule but you need to write 3,300 words on the very first day which I find very difficult. I don’t know how I did it in the past with the amount of stuff that happens at the beginning of the month (mainly Halloween, Birthday). If anything, I should modify the schedule to have the heaviest days of writing happen in the middle of the month. The beginning of the month is tough, but the end of the mouth is brutal with Thanksgiving and the beginnings of holiday shopping.

Whatever ends up happening, I’ve been enjoying it immensely. I’ve been writing short stories non-stop for a while now so writing a full novel is both tons of fun, but extremely challenging. It’s going to be really nice getting to know these characters and taking them on a long journey.

I wish I had planned a little more. I’ve got one bone in a skeleton outline and it’s not even a very big bone. I’m “pantsing” this one as they say so we’ll see what happens.

Slick New Theme

Even though I only post here once or twice a month, I decided to give the ol’ site a little face lift last night.

I love how clean and simple the articles on Medium look and how the focus is totally on the words. I wanted to mimic that as best I could so I found this nice template called Gravit that has no sidebars and wonderful choices for font and font sizing.

One odd benefit of this design is that I no longer feel obligated to find an image to accompany a post. I may tack on an image to a story every once in a while but I think stories look so much better with just the white background and the black text.

I briefly considered switching from WordPress to a new blogging platform called Ghost. It looks super slick and clean and very minimal, but I ultimately decided against it. If I can barely bring myself to post here once a month then I’m certainly not going to go through the trouble of trying to install a new platform on the server.

In other news, I’ve been writing some scripts for a first person sci-fi audio series/podcast type deal. It’s certainly different than anything I’ve ever done but I am really enjoying it. I love getting into this character’s head and seeing how freely the words are flowing.

I haven’t decided what I am going to do with it when I finish. I have someone lined up to be the voice, but I don’t know where or how I am going to release it yet. I’d really like to create a separate website for it and create an immersive experience where in addition to the narration by the character, there would be notes, maps, drawings, etc. “from” the character.

I’m leaning that way, but I need to finish it first!

The Hand is Back

Ah, it’s been far too long since I’ve been able to brush my teeth my with right hand, shave with my right hand, use a knife, tie my shoes, etc. etc. etc.

The cast is off, the pins are out and I’m on week three of physical therapy. My hand is getting stronger every day. It even looks better.

healing broken hand

Well, any thing looks better compared to this monster. (Warning: it’s pretty jacked up.)

I’m slowly getting back into the groove of writing every day. Typing isn’t an aggravating and frustrating experience anymore. Now I can finally get these ideas out of my head that have been swimming around in there for the last few months.
